Dual Birthday

I made a basketball cake for my nephews 10th birthday(Dec 20th). They are here from Utah, so it was really cool to be able to make him a cake.
It's just a 2 layer square chocolate cake with chocolate pieces in the center. The backboard and balls are fondant. It was fun to make.

We were also celebrating my sister-in-laws Birthday (which happens to be today). Her theme was chocolate. This was a chocolate cake with chocolate chips. On top was a white chocolate cream and the whole thing was wrapped in chocolate. They call it a chocolate collar. The white dots are white chocolate the light brown dots are milk chocolate and the rest is dark chocolate. It was the first time I'd tried something like this, so it's a little messy. And I didn't have the right paper to use, so the collar has a few wrinkles. I will definitely try this again.
The aftermath of making 2 cakes in one day is not pretty. My kitchen won't recover completely until tomorrow. But well worth it :)

Sugar-Free Chocolate Cake

For my mom's birthday I make her a sugar free cake. It's usually spice cake, because I have a great recipe that works with splenda quite well. But Chocolate is her favorite, so this year I decided to try chocolate again. It was pretty good.
Here's the link to the recipe

Chocolate Birthday Cake

Just a little cake for one of the ladies on the School PTC with me. She turned 30 yesterday and we're having lunch and cake to celebrate ;)

It's a 2 layer 8" round Devil's Food cake with chocolate buttercream frosting and Chocolate Creme Pirouette cookies around the sides and a ribbon to finish it off.

Those cookies look cool, but it turns out they don't have a great flavor. I was dissapointed!

I created a Monster...

No really!

He's a cute little monster. He's a 3 layer 6" round carrot cake. We are having a Trunk-or-Treat at school and the families who decorate their trunk will have the chance to win one of 3 cakes, this being one of them :)

Halloween Birthday Cake

Halloween Birthday cake
I made this cake for Teresa's friends birthday party. It was a super intense cake with a lot of stuff on it. But really fun! And I broke it up so I wasn't doing it all in one day. (plus a super fun costume party - Teresa was mother nature and I was a scarecrow - check the family blog after halloween for a pic)

It's a 3 tiered cake, with a 2 layer 10" Devil's food round, with chocolate frosting in the middle and buttercream on the outside. The middle layer is a 2 layer 8" round, and the Jack on top was made using a small pyrex bowl.
This is the back

Close-up of the spider and pumpkins. I had originally planned to do 7 spiders in different parts of the cake, but after making 1, I decided 2 would be enough. They were pretty tedious to make. But cute!

Close-up of the cat and a jack-o-lantern
Close-up of the witch with the moon behind her.
And the Jack-o-lantern with a spider on top. This is covered in fondant.

Wizards of Waverly Place

This cake was for a friends daughter who wanted a Wizards of Waverly Place party(it's a Disney show). Only trouble is, the show doesn't really have any 1 item that represents it. So the end result was Merlin's hat(used in one episode - that I watched, btw) and Alex's wand, with spells from the show piped on the side.

It's a 3 layer white cake, with a little surprise orange frosting in the middle. I wanted to marble the inside with some orange, but for one, I forgot :P and I wasn't sure what color it would be after I cooked it. I'll have to experiment on a different cake. The hat is a sugar cone wrapped in fondant and the wand is just fondant with a yellow fondant star and yellow sugar sprinkles to give it a magical look ;)

This ones for you

A 4 layer cake alternating chocolate fudge and marble chocolate chip, with chocolate buttercream in between the layers covered in white buttercream. YUMMY!

I made this just because, so we get to eat this one :)

(It was yummy - or "lummy" as Nathan put it)

First Birthday Cake

I did this cake for Bennett's first birthday. The design was by Cindy, his mom. It's the combination of two ideas.

The middle layer is a 3 layer 8" round with buttercream and fondant stars and ball border.
The bottom is a 10" round cut to look like blocks. I used buttercream as the base and the colors are MM fondant.
The top is a jumbo cupcake, with fondant wrapped around it and buttercream on top.

Chess Anyone?

I made this cake for my dad's birthday. The chess board is a peanut butter cake with chocolate peanut truffle filling and chocolate buttercream. The white squares on the board are fondant and the pieces are dark and white chocolate, made using a candy mold. (which I have, if someone local wants to borrow it)

Wilton Cake Class Course 3

This class had 2 cakes

This one is our first fondant covered cake

This one had to be fondant covered and 2 tier. It was November so I went with a fall theme. Plus I learned how to make chocolate fondant (it tastes like a tootsie roll). I also learned NOT to use Marshmallow creme. It makes a very soft fondant, that breaks very easy. But I managed, I had made my leaves out of it and some were breaking, but you can't tell.
This is Serina's cake. I had to post it, because it came out super cute. I'd love to make this cake sometime :)

Wilton Cake Class Course 2

In this class you make all of the different things each week and in the last class you decorate 1 cake

Made October 2008

Wilton Cake Class Course 1

I don't like these, but I have to post them. They are the cakes you do in course 1.

This one is using a cookie cutter to imprint a shape on the cake and then using a random tip to fill it in.

This one was ugly, the colors are too bright and there were so many flowers, but they were the flower we'd learned to make.

This one isn't too bad. A simple cake with roses on top

All of these cakes were made in April of 2007

This was Teresa's birthday cake

After it started to fall...

It says "TDH & M detective Agency: The Birthday Mystery"

Thomas The Tank Engine and Sir Topham Hatt Cake

This one was fun making because Nathan requested a Choo-Choo cake months ago. It wasn't easy though. The 3-D cakes are much more difficult than a round or sheet cake. I know, duh, obviously they are more difficult. I just haven't mastered them. At least this one didn't try and fall :)

More Birthday Cakes

The dots and stars are fondant, everything else is buttercream. I don't like to cover cakes with fondant if I don't have to. (Sept. 2008)

The gift and the hat have cake under the fondant (1/2009)

Just a chocolate cake with peanut butter frosting and crushed peanut butter cups on the sides
(3/2009)

The candles are fondant (1/2009)

A lemon cake with raspberry filling - Yum! ;P (1/20/2009)

Cakes using a star tip

These are just your typical star tip cake.
I had a pan for the bus, the other two I drew on the cake
Taz was made Sept. 2008

Hamburger and Fries Cake

I made this for my husband's birthday this year.
The bun is 2 8" round yellow cakes with chocolate frosting and fondant over that.
The patty is a brownie
The tomato, lettuce, bacon and cheese are all fondant
The fries are just yellow cake cut with a crinkly pastry cutter
The condiments are tube frosting from the store
Made February 2009

Pink Skull Cake

I modeled this one off a Mylar balloon.

The skull is fondant, everything else is buttercream.

It was a lot of fun to make.

It is a 2 layer 10" cake

Graduation Cake

The graduation cap, tassle, and the red and blue beads on the bottom are all fondant.
(I made the black myself. It takes a lot of food coloring. I basically dip the fondant in it a few times to get the nice black color, smearing my hands with lots of Crisco before).

Firetruck

I bought the fire truck pan and followed the instructions on the back :)

A cute little under the sea cake I found on M&M's site. It was fun to make and really cute

Anniversary cake

I made this small cake for my parents anniversary. The idea was to create a small wedding cake. Pretty basic, the flowers were made ahead of time using royal icing.

I made another for their anniversary, one special for my mom. It was sugar free. The cake is a spice cake recipe substituting Splenda and the frosting was cream cheese, pudding and cool whip. It's not very pretty, but the consistency of the frosting is more pudding like, then frosting like.
